RESPAWNABLES
Digital Legends Entertainment / Zynga
Project Description

Respawnables is a third person shooter with a visual style similar to Team Fortress, and gameplay based on Call of Duty's Kill Confirmed mode. The game concept is fully multiplayer, but has a single player mode with bots, using the same multiplayer maps for offline gameplay. All modes help the player gain XP for map, gear and weapon unlocks

The game is F2P, with a Pay 2 Win economy based on selling weapon/armor sets and vanity items. This was the first serious effort from Digital Legends to create a sustainable F2P economy. It has been mostly successful, specially with the addition of Live events. These events were quite expensive to create for the team, as they depended in the creation of lots of 3D assets to sell during the events.

A more systemic approach, some sort of meta-game, like a Battle Pass, would have been more interesting in the long run, and easier to maintain. Of course, battle passes weren't a thing in those days.

Other more needed F2P systems and monetization changes were relegated for technical reasons and / or fear of pissing off all our user; Players were either already used to a very simple Pay to Win model, or just playing with a hacked version of the game. At the end most of these planned changes were saved for the next projects

The game was used to promote the 30th anniversary of Ghostbusters with a very succesful live event, and has used other Sony Pictures properties, like Men in Black and Elysium. This really boosted the player base.

Thanks to its simple yet rewarding gameplay, and its striking visuals the game found a dedicated community of players, with youtube reviews of all content released through near monthly live events.

Activision's purchase of the studio left Respawnables and all previous games out of the app stores. Thankfully, Respawnables has an offline mode, so if you downloaded it before, you can still play it.
