SPLIT/SECOND: VELOCITY
Digital Legends Entertainment / Disney Interactive
Project Description

Split/Second is an arcade racing game based on the console game of the same title. The player can trigger explosive events to modify the race tracks or smash his competitors. The idea was to try to adapt its explosive action to a much more limited device. Not a bad idea per se, but the project conflicted with 2 other projects being developed at the same time (Bruce Lee and Battlefield Bad Company 2). Thus the team assigned was too small to carry a project of such ambition

I started working on the adaptation of the console game's design documentation. The problem is that I was already lead designer at another very complex project, Bruce Lee. Soon I was forced to leave Split/Second in the hands of our producer, who in theory had experience with racing games. End result: the game was built in 6 months of grueling crunch, with a skeleton of the console game experience, and none of its polish. The game design was faced by anyone who would be available. That is, programmers, artists... The results were not good, and the team knew it was impossible to release a quality conversion. Anyway, they tried and died (figuratively speaking) on their feet

After launch I had already finished Bruce Lee, so I got the task to built 6 new tracks for 2 updates, while trying to fix existing tracks and car handling. I couldn't do much to fix the old tracks, except polish the navigation mesh. The new tracks were a bit more playable, but still we were limited by the car physics model, wich sadly was too basic to reproduce the playability found on the console version
