Lucia's Adventure - Short UE5 game
Oscar Escamilla
Project Description

This short game is a gift I made to my niece for her Halloween birthday. It took 2.5 weeks, 9-10 hours a day.

I used the game framework I've been building in Unreal since 2020, with a few asset packs gathered from the Epic Store and other asset bundles. The idea was to make a small isometric adventure where my niece wakes up in the night of Halloween, at a misterious place and faces some thrilling terrors. At the end of the game, a few family congratulatory videos would be shown.

Since I didn't know how much it would take to build the planned levels, I did a vertical slice with the most complex one, the Dungeon (the third). It took too long, and taught me I needed to make simpler, open air levels in order to take advantage of all the landscapping tools Unreal Engine offers. This went great, as it forced me to use tools I was unfamiliar with. I also did a few interesting things with Sequencer. Overall, it was a very educating experience.

Of course, the objective was to test also the game framework I was working with, and the results were...not great. I need to fix an ungodly amount of systems. Since I was on a tight time limit (my niece's birthday) I also did things quick and dirty. The next weeks will be tough as I start throwing old systems to the fire in order to remake them.

Anyways, my niece loved the game; I am happy how the game ended looking and sounding, and I am a better Unreal developer for it. But design-wise I would have needed more time for iteration. It was a very quick and dirty way of doing stuff.
